Microsoft Partnering with Xiaomi To Offer Windows 10 on Select Handsets
“Microsoft is hoping to increase the user base of Windows Phone by partnering with hardware makers like Xiaomi
At the WinHEC conference in China, Microsoft has made an interesting deal with the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi. As part of the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 downloads to a select group of the Xiaomi Mi 4 smartphone users. The feedback from these users will be used to improve the experience of the mobile operating system.
Xiaomi users who will choose to be the part of the Windows 10 experimental program will need to flash Windows 10 ROM on their Mi 4 devices. Since the ROM does not support dual-boot option, the users will have to forgo Android on their devices. This program will be initially only tested in China, where Xiaomi has the biggest consumer base.
With this experimental program, the Redmond-based tech giant is hoping to increase the user base of Windows Phone. If the program is successful, Microsoft might be able to use other popular hardware makers to launch Windows 10-powered devices in China, the world’s largest smartphone market. Xiaomi, on its part, told The Next Web that this is an entirely Microsoft-led effort, and the Windows 10 ROM will be solely supported by Microsoft
