Kolkata To Become India’s First WiFi Enabled City
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday launched an ambitious project of extending Wi-Fi connectivity to Kolkata and its suburbs including Salt Lake, Barasat, Howrah and Rajarhat.
Wi- Fi services were launched in Kolkata’s Park Street at an event where along with Ms Banerjee, city mayor Sovon Chatterjee and a host of other Trinamool Congress Ministers were present.
From a stage erected at the Park Street crossing blocking significant part of its right flank, Ms Banerjee tweeted to flag off the Wi-Fi connectivity.
“Kolkata will be the first Wi-Fi city in the world…in the country. After launching of the scheme it will be knowledge hub in the world,” Ms Banerjee said.
“Over 2,000 km of cables have already been laid. Another 250 km to 300 km will be laid soon… By the end of April the entire Kolkata will be a Wi-Fi city,” Ms Banerjee said.
However, questions are being raised whether the Wi- FI services will be free of cost or not. “Initially, the service will be offered at no cost, subject to fair usage, for individual customers,” a press release issued by Reliance Jio, the service provider, said.
